Cody Knecht John Wiemann, Algona, Iowa; 2. Peg Lewis Heather Pesicka, Cylinder, Iowa; 3. Joe Schmit Schmit, Britt, Iowa. Friday, June 27, 2008 Emily Hiscocks Hill In the wake of the Firecracker Special, fans and drivers alike made it to the Pritchard Family Auto Stores Hancock County Speedway on Friday night. After a 5-lap Cruiser class win by Peg Lewis and Heather Pesicka, the Extreme Embroidery Hobby Stocks made their way onto the track. Twelve cars were set to battle their way to victory in a 12-lap showdown. Nick Meyer led the way followed by Jonathon Trunkhill. By lap 2 Calvin Lange had cruised past Trunkhill on his way to pass Meyer in a daily double. After the first caution of the race for debris, Lange pulled away from the pack followed closely by Chad Gentz. In the end, Lange came away with the win followed by Gentz, Meyer, Chris Monson, and John Madson. Ready to show off their goods, nineteen 360 Modifieds entered the track in turn 4. On the start, Travis Woodbeck ran out of real estate and found himself over the edge in turn one. George Gilliland maintained the top spot while Adam Ackerman made his way up to challenge for the lead. The first caution of the contest happened when Corey Spora hit the wall on the front stretch and found Kylan Poulson upside down on his car. After minutes of detangling the cars and patching the track, Gilliland continued to lead while Nate Chodur was on the move just three spots back. Making use of the high-side groove, Chodur took over the leader’s position on his way to a win. Ackerman came in second followed by Gilliland, Jamie Anderson, and Shane Swanson. Eighteen laps was the distance for the IMCA Stock Cars. Jared Dirks used his starting position to jump into the lead followed by John Campbell. As the top two were making some room for themselves, the caution flag flew for Randy Doran. On the restart, Dirks and Campbell maintained their positions but felt the pressure from Kevin Opheim. A spin by Chad Palmer was all Opheim needed to zip right past the top two cars on his way to the winner’s circle. Dirks placed second followed by Campbell, Jeff Dolphin, and Ryan Hiscocks. Last on tap were the JBS Auto Parts IMCA Modifieds. Dave Kuykendall was first to lead the pack followed by Jeff Feaster and Alex Yohn. On the backstretch, Feaster saw some daylight and took over the lead as Kuykendall bobbled his racer. Rich Lewerke also moved up into the second spot. The top two drivers pulled away from the rest of the field and raced wheel-to-wheel until the caution flag waved for Ryan Ruter as he met the wet infield. It didn’t take long for Jeremy Mills to prove that the high side was the promised land as he moved up quickly. Halfway through the race, Mills was contesting Feaster for the lead. With just 5 laps to go, Mills had created space for himself just as Feaster was off the pace. Mills pulled his Beshey Trucking racer to victory lane once again this season. Lewerke made his way through traffic to finish second followed by Rob Hughes, Yohn, and Scott Olson. The 2nd Annual Monson and Sons Trucking Firecracker B-Modified Special is scheduled for Thursday, July 3rd. A regular night of racing will also resume with the JBS Auto Parts IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, and Extreme Embroidery Hobby Stocks. The rain date will be Friday, July 4th. Pit gates open at 4:00pm as hot laps begin at 6:30pm with racing to follow. 6/20/08 JBS Auto Parts IMCA Modifieds A-Main 01 -- 1. Ryan Ruter, Kanawha, Iowa; 2. Jeremy Mills, Garner, Iowa; 3. Friday, June 20, 2008 Emily Hiscocks Hill Pritchard Family Auto Stores was on hand to sponsor Friday night’s races at the Hancock County Speedway in Britt, Iowa. First on the racing oval were the Extreme Embroidery Hobby Stocks. It was a 12-lap start to finish race as Chris Monson won for the first time this season in a caution-free contest. Tony Smidt took home second followed by Randy Hadacek, Roger Haupt, Jr., and Matt Ring. The 360 Modifieds were ready to strut their stuff in a 12-lap battle. In preparation for the upcoming special at the Britt speed plant, sixteen drivers were on hand to test the track. From the start, Corey Klouse took charge followed by Brandon Ostwald and Thomas Buns. In the first caution of the evening, Ostwald lost control of his racer in turn four. On the restart, Klouse was able to distance himself from Travis Woodbeck and Adam Ackerman. Turn four claimed yet another second-place car as Woodbeck got squirrelly collecting Shane Swanson. On the restart, the top three cars of Klouse, Ackerman, and Tad Reutzel pulled away from the pack. As turn four neared, Klouse got loose and collected Ackerman giving Reutzel a clear path to the front. After another caution brought the racers together, Reutzel was able to maintain his front position to the double-checkers. Nate Chodur came in second, Logan Brown was third, Woodbeck fourth, and George Gilliland rounded off the top five. An 18-lap feature was up next for the IMCA Stock Cars. John Campbell jumped out to an early lead followed closely by Chad Palmer and Jeff Dolphin. In yet another caution-free race, Dolphin was able to use his driving technique and new tires to maneuver his way to the front. Once the Monson and Sons Trucking racer took the lead, there was no turning back. Dolphin crossed the finished line first followed by Palmer, Campbell, Travis Hoeft, and Jared Dirks. Fifteen JBS Auto Parts IMCA Modifieds were set to dazzle the fans in the evening’s last competition. It was the Alex show from the start as Alex Hanson led the field followed closely by Alex Yohn. Things changed when Yohn met the fate of turn four collecting JJ Wise. The Ruter Farms racer driven by Ryan Ruter was waiting in the wings as he overtook the lead from Hanson on the restart. As Ruter pulled away in his Sidebiter Chasis, Rich Lewerke and Jeremy Mills made their way up to battle for the second spot. Halfway through the race, the drivers settled into position. Ruter continued to dominate as Mills secured the second spot. In the end, it was Ruter collecting his first win at the Speedway. In a post race interview, Ruter was all smiles. “I don’t pay attention to points standings. I just make sure week in and week out that the car is ready to go.” Ruter is a regular in Britt as well as Algona and Mason City. He plans on racing the night of the B-Modified special and Night of 1000 Stars at the Hancock County Speedway. Ruter will also be travelling to Knoxville for the Harris Clash. On Friday, June 27th, the races will be sponsored by Schroeder Racing Products, Iowa Falls, and Hideaway Restaurant, Kanawha. All classes will be included in the evening’s show followed by the mechanics race. The 2nd Annual Monson and Sons Firecracker B-Modified Special is scheduled for Thursday, July 3rd. The regular classes will also be racing for points—Extreme Embroidery Hobby Stocks, IMCA Stock Cars, and JBS Auto Parts IMCA Modifieds. Because of the special, there will not be races on Friday, July 4th. Racing action begins with hot laps at 7:00 and the races to follow. The 4/10 mile speedway is located southeast of Britt, Iowa. 6/13/08 JBS Auto Parts IMCA Modifieds A-Main 01 -- 1. T.J. Stalker, Mason City, Iowa; 2. Ryan Ruter, Kanawha, Iowa; 3. Friday, June 13, 2008 Emily Hiscocks Hill The drivers were hookin’ their Hoosiers at the Pritchard Family Auto Stores Hancock County Speedway on a night sponsored by North Iowa Collision, Clear Lake, and McNeese Tire, Britt. Also on hand was the Dixie’s Chicks Relay for Life team for their annual golf ball drop. With 741 golf balls claimed, the team raised over $3000, their biggest amount ever. Before the main show began, fans watched as the golf balls were dropped. There were six golf balls in the hole, giving each winner a prize of $83. The winners were Tammy Lennox, Lisa Peterson, April Peterson, Red Follman, Karen Larsen, and Mo Clark. Sue Carlson, captain of the Relay team, would like to thank everyone for their contributions. Other events sponsored by the Team are: a bowling tournament in March at Sidetrack Lanes, Turkey Bowling at J&D Hob Nob, an Annual Golf Outing at Hillside Country Club in Wesley, and miscellaneous garage sales and bake sales. The Relay is next Friday night beginning at 6:00pm at the Garner-Hayfield track and lasts until early Saturday morning. Back on the track, five cruiser cars made their way in front of the grandstands. John Wiemann and Ben Schultze, Algona, powered to the front of the pack for the 8 lap feature. Behind the leaders, Kevin Kinnetz and Robert Kinnetz battled Tim Sidles and Ramon Sidles for position. On the last lap, Peg Lewis and Heather Pesicka gave Wiemann and Schultze their only challenge of the race. In the end, Wiemann and Schultze prevailed for the victory followed by Lewis/Pesicka, Kinnetz/Kinnetz, and Sidles/Sidles. Next up were the Extreme Embroidery Hobby Stocks. Twelve drivers made their way out of turn four in hopes of winning the 12-lap feature. Nick Meyer jumped out to a quick lead with Tony Smidt on his bumper. Behind the leaders, Stac Schroeder was making his way through the pack on the high side. It took just 6 laps for Schroeder to catch the leader and move in front. From then on, it was a one-man race as the drivers settled in single-file. Schroeder captured the trophy for the second time at the Britt speed plant. He was followed by Smidt, Meyer, Chris Monson, and Matt Ring. The 360 B-Modifieds were ready to rumble in a 12 lap battle. Fans got a show right from the start as the drivers darted for the front position. Brandon Ostwald lead the field in the first two turns only to be passed by Travis Woodbeck by the end of the first lap. The drivers continued to shuffle until the top three drivers—Woodbeck, Jesse Hoeft, and Adam Ackerman—pulled away from the rest of the field. A slip up high by Woodbeck allowed Hoeft and Ackerman to pull away to do battle as the other drivers settled in their positions. With just two laps to go, Ackerman closed in on Hoeft. It was too little too late as Hoeft crossed the finish line first followed by Ackerman, Woodbeck, Jamie Anderson, and Corey Spora. Thirteen IMCA Stock Cars were next on tap. Travis Hoeft used his front row starting position to move ahead of the field and pull away. The night’s first caution flag flew when Kevin Hoeft ran out of real estate on turn three and disappeared over the edge. Just as the drivers were getting back into their groove, Kevin Paca got squirrelly in turn three causing the drivers to scatter left and right. On the restart, Hoeft put the pedal to the metal and drove away from the pack. Behind him, John Campbell, Brian Blessington, and Jared Dirks went three-wide in the corners trying to claim the second spot. The third caution of the race gave powerhouses Jeff Dolphin and Kevin Opheim a chance at the lead. Hoeft continued to lead as Dolphin and Opheim battled for fourth. Halfway through the race, the battles continued as Hoeft tried to hold off Dirks and Opheim tried to hold off Dolphin. Dirks caught a case of the loosy goosys which allowed Hoeft to pull away with the victory. Dirks crossed the line second with Opheim, Blessington, and Campbell close behind. The last race of the evening featured twelve JBS Auto Parts IMCA Modifieds. T.J. Stalker and Alex Yohn battled in the front as Ryan Ruter maneuvered his way up to third. Rich Lewerke slid under Rob Hughes for the fourth position. Four local powerhouses made it to the front to battle. Stalker led the way followed by Lewerke, Ruter, and Jeremy Mills. Halfway through the race, Stalker widened his lead to half a straightaway over Lewerke. With just two laps to go, Ruter had made his way to the second spot and up on Stalker’s bumper. The double checkers waved before Ruter could get past Stalker. This was Stalker’s first win of the season at Hancock County Speedway. Ruter came in second followed by Lewerke, J. Mills, and Alex Yohn. Join John Pletcher and Darlene Weber for more exciting racing action next Friday. Pritchard Family Auto Stores will be the night’s sponsor while Kim Schleuger Trucking and Bob Roth Trucking will be giving away two kids bikes. Parents don’t forget about the weekly drawing for the Kid Fan of the Week. Racing action begins with hot laps at 7:00 and the races to follow. Friday, May 23, 2008 Emily Hiscocks The boys were on their best behavior Friday night at the Pritchard Family Auto Stores Hancock County Speedway as Arnold Motor Supply, Garner was on hand to sponsor the competition. First on the speed plant were the Extreme Embroidery Hobby Stocks. The 14-car contest was caution-free for all 12 laps. In the middle of the pack, Chad Gentz was on a charge as Calvin Lange and Matt Ring battled for the top position. Once Lange saw daylight, he became the man to beat as the racers behind him settled in single-file. The Two Rivers Transportation sponsored car crossed the finish line first followed by Ring, Gary Pesicka, Gentz, and Roger Haupt, Jr. This was Lange’s second win of the young season. Fourteen drivers were set to do battle in the B-Modified feature race. At the drop of the hammer, the boys battled for the top position. The top five drivers made it a battle for the books as they pulled away from the rest of the field. Travis Woodbeck paced the field followed closely by Corey Spora, Jesse Hoeft, Adam Ackerman, and Shane Swanson. It seemed to be Woodbeck’s race until the last few laps. Lapped traffic got in the way in turn 2 allowing Spora to take over the lead. With just two laps to go, Ackerman took a shot at the lead. His charge from the 10th starting position proved to be successful as he was crowned champ for the second time at the speed plant. Spora came in second followed by Hoeft, Woodbeck, and Swanson. Fifteen laps was the distance for the 12-car IMCA Stock Car showdown. This season, these drivers have given the fans a good race each week. Friday night was no different as John Campbell used his front-row starting position to take the first lead of the race. In no time, Kevin Hoeft and Brian Blessington were up to battle for the top spot. It was a battle for the books interrupted by the evening’s first caution flap as Travis Hoeft lost control of his orange racer collecting Kevin Opheim. On the restart, the assault on Campbell continued as it was Blessington applying the pressure. Racing side-by-side for two laps, it was a battle of which driver found the most traction on the 4/10 mile oval. On the last lap, Flyin’ Brian Blessington pulled past Campbell to grab yet another trophy at the speedway. The Arnold’s Motor Supply driver was followed by Kevin Hoeft, Campbell, Chad Palmer, and Kevin Opheim. In the nightcap, twenty laps was the distance for the JBS Auto Parts IMCA Modifieds. Clint Hatlestad led the pack followed by the heavy-hitters of TJ Stalker, Rich Lewerke, and Alex Yohn. As the racers found their line, Jeremy Mills made his way to the front to battle for the best position. On lap 11, Lewerke found his way to the front as Hatlestad fell off the pace. Stalker and Mills were right with the leader with just three laps to go. The first and second caution of the race did not affect the leader’s domination. The Dandyland Farm racing machine of Lewerke crossed the stripe first follwed by Stalker, Mills, Ryan Ruter, and Hatlestad.

Friday, May 16, 2008 Hancock County Speedway Emily Hiscocks Long-time racer Al Hejna was on hand in his Harris Auto Racing Chasis at the Pritchard Family Auto Stores Hancock County Speedway on Friday night. In its third year, the Lucky 7 club continues to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). Hejna, along with his brother Mike, plans on traveling to the 33 dirt tracks in Iowa to promote awareness for juvenile diabetes. In order to do this, Hejna is selling t-shirts for $25 encouraging support for JDRF. With just $5 going to cover the cost of the shirts, the other $20 is donated to the foundation. This is made possible through the generosity of Intensity T-Shirts out of Boone, Iowa. Al is hoping to sell at least 2000 t-shirts, raising $40,000 for JDRF. If you would like to know more about Hejna’s cause or his racing schedule, visit www.hejnaracing.com. The racing evening got started with the newly added Two-Person Cruisers. With just three cars making the call, the 6-lap feature was sure to be a tight race. After a relatively quiet five laps led by Peg Lewis and Troy Krug, the final lap saw some action. Joe Heyes and Chris Heyes maneuvered their #83 racer alongside the leader. In turn 2, fate set in as they hit some loose earth allowing Lewis and Krug to separate themselves from the challenge. Lewis and Krug crossed the stripe first followed by Cody Knecht and John Wienmann of Algona. Seventeen Extreme Embroidery Hobby Stocks entered the track for the 12 lap showdown. After just one lap, Calvin Lange found himself comfortably in front of the field. Behind him, the field of racers took each turn 3-wide keeping fans on the edge of their seats. Halfway through the race, Stac Schroeder had made his way through traffic up to the fourth position while last week’s winner, John Madson, was up to sixth. After Jonathan Trunkhill spun in turn 2, the first caution flag was thrown. With the field back in a pack, Schroeder and Madson were sure to test their power against the dominant Lange. On the backstretch, Schroeder was side-by-side with Lange when he fell off the pace. A flat tire ended his evening, giving Lange his edge back. No one would challenge the leader as he took home the hardware. Lange was followed by Chad Gentz, Roger Haupt, Tony Smidt, and John Madson. The B-Modified racers were in the staging area and ready to rumble. Fifteen cars made a parade lap for the fans before the 12-lap competition. Rodney Slagle led the first lap followed by Doug Cook and Dan Hanselman. Slagle continued to increase his lead and got even more room after Hanselman fell off the pace. After the first caution, the pack was hot on the heels of Slagle. Feeling the pressure, Slagle got loose in turn 4 allowing Doug Cook to take over the top position. With just three laps to go, Adam Ackerman had made his way up to the front to challenge the leader. He needed just one caution to pull past Cook and separate himself from the field. Ackerman captured the checkered flag followed by Cook, Shane Swanson, Slagle, and Jesse Hoeft. In the IMCA Stock Car feature, it was a one-man race. Mike Jergens started in the front and never experienced anything else in the West Hancock Ambulance Service sponsored evening. With a one-lane track, Jergens stuck to his mark on his way to victory. Jergens was followed by Chad Palmer, Aaron Haggerty, Kevin Opheim, and Travis Shipman. The much-anticipated return of Al Hejna kept people in the stands until the end. In the JBS Auto Parts IMCA Modified feature, Hejna had some good company. Jeremy Mills, a regular at the track, is also racing for a good cause: Hunter’s Hope, which raises money for Krabbe Leukodystrophy, an inherited nervous system disease. The racing action was equally as interesting as Scott Olson took over the top spot followed by Ryan Ruter, Logan Brown, and Alex Yohn. As the first caution flag flew, Ruter made his run on Olson. That was the last battle Olson faced as he cruised to victory. Mills crossed the line second followed by Ruter, Ed Green, Jeff Feaster, and Hejna. Join John Pletcher and Darlene Weber each week at the Britt speed plant. The track is located southeast of Britt. Hot laps begin at 7:00pm with races to follow. Next week’s races are sponsored by Arnold Motor Supply out of Garner.

Racing. Finally.
After failed week after failed week due to the weather, the Pritchard
Family Auto Stores Hancock County Speedway opened its gates for the
first time this racing season. On a night sponsored by Maddog
Motorsports, anxious racers and fans were ready to start their
engines. In the first class of the evening, the 2-person Cruiser
cars took to the track. This class takes place of the Hornet class from
last year. Three cars took part in the 5-lap competition. By turn one,
Joe Heyes and Chris Heyes of Burt were out of the race with a flat tire.
That left the #31 of Peg Lewis and Heather Pesicka to do battle with the
#49 of Cody Knecht and John Wiemann. Lewis and Pesicka made a last run
in turn 2 but caught a case of the loosy goosys to give Knecht and
Wiemann the space they needed to capture the first feature win of the
season.
Twenty racers
entered the track for the 12 lap Hobby Stock showdown. Fan favorite John
Madson led the racers from the pole position. With much support behind
him, Madson was able to maneuver his racer around the track flawlessly.
Despite two cautions, Madson avoided charges by both Chris Monson and
Stac Schroeder to take home the checkered.
Next on tap were
the B-Modifieds. Twelve drivers entered the race track with one goal in
mind. Thomas Buns, Jesse Hoeft, and Shane Swanson left the field behind
in a three-way battle for the top position. Hoeft manned the front spot
while the other two battled back and forth. After the second caution and
a single-file restart, Swanson made a move on Hoeft. His attempts came
up short as the third caution flag was thrown for some fire under the
hood of Gerald Curryʼs machine. On the last lap of the race, fans were
on the edge of their seats as the top three cars continued to jockey.
Hoeft eventually broke away on the backstretch while Buns bobbled in
turn four to lose some ground. Hoeft crossed the finish line first
followed by Swanson, Corey Spora, and Dan Hanselman.
In an 18-lap
contest, seventeen Stock Cars paced the race track. Jeff Dolphin and
Kevin Opheim led the driver s from the start, leaving a pack of seven
cars to battle for third through tenth position. Dolphin continued to
pull away as the drivers settled into single-file. The race looked to be
in Dolphinʼs control until some synchronize spinning by Gary Lalor and
Randy Doran. The field could breathe easy on the restart and make a move
on the front-runner. On the restart, Dolphin shot out like a rocket on
the high side taking the top five cars with him. At the halfway point,
Opheim was ready to do battle with Dolphin but found the loose dirt in
turn two and lost two spots. With five laps to go, Brian Blessington was
knocking on Dolphinʼs door. The two battled side-by-side going into turn
one of the final lap. Blessington pulled a bit hard on the inside
causing his car to go on two wheels. A miraculous save was not enough as
Jeff Dolphin took the checkered followed by Blessington, Opheim, Jared
Dirks, and Chad Palmer.
It was anyoneʼs
race as the IMCA Modifieds took to the track for the final race of the
evening. A dominate heat race from Jeremy Mills proved to be telling as
he sped away from the bunch leaving Logan Brown, Alex Yohn, and Ryan
Ruter in a battle for position. By lap four, Mills had a straightaway
lead on the rest of the drivers, but Ruter was making a charge as he
took over the second spot. Mills ran the high side groove as Ruter tried
to challenge him on the inside. A failed attempt left Ruter with a trip
pit side. After three more cautions, Mills continued to dominate. Jeff
Feaster gave Mills one last challenge but came up short in the end.
Jeremy Mills was awarded the hardware for the evening. Feaster came in
second followed by Alex Yohn, Todd Stinehart, and T.J. Stalker.
Join John
Pletcher, Darlene Weber, and the crew every Friday from some great
racing action. Next Friday, the races will be sponsored by the West
Hancock Ambulance Service.
